derek hess
cleveland-based hess is best known for his striking illustrations adorning underground concert posters. inspired during his childhood by graphic novel captain america and artist gil kane, derek hess has explored the rugged underbelly of society, capturing dark themes of depression, loss and death in his creations.
hess' works have been exhibited worldwide and are included in permanent collections of the louvre in france and the rock and roll hall of fame and museum in cleveland. he has been featured in publications such as spin magazine, newsweek, juxtapoz, alternative press, and numerous other magazines around the world. his art has also been featured on mtv and vh1.
as an extension of his art, hess has created the strhess tour, a symbiotic experience of art and contemporary music, which in recent years has featured performances by alternative bands such as bleeding through, darkest hour, shadows fall and as i lay dying. hess’ art also appears on a line of apparel called strhess clothing.
