EXPOSURE: five photographers
Joel Barhamand was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago when became interested in photography as a hobby. Joel attended Ohio University where he earned a degree in Commercial Photography. He now lives and works in New York City. He has had the exciting pleasure of assisting established photographers such as Mary-Ellen Mark and Andrew Hetherington. JoelŐs clients range from Jane Magazine to Polo Ralph Lauren and in 2006 Joel exhibited works along side other noteworthy contemporary figures in Tim BarberŐs Tiny-Vice exhibition in New York City. Joel's exuberant urban snapshots, included in the exhibition, exemplify the influence he has discovered in the dichotomy of living the suburbs of major cities.
After obtaining her BA in psychology, Debbie Carlos decided to pursue an education in photography at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. Her training in the intricacies of human nature is drastically important to her work as a visual artist. For the series sampled by "EXPOSURE", Carlos surveyed and photographed educational exhibits of preserved animals on display at Chicago's famous Field Museum. Within these precisely cropped photographs, an engaging and deceptively smart critique ensues. Carlos has exhibited her unique work in Los Angeles, Chicago, and London.
Marlaina Read is an emerging artist currently living and practicing in Sydney, Australia. She has recently graduated from Sydney University's Sydney College of the Arts with an Honors Degree in Visual Arts. Marlaina has exhibited in several group exhibitions in Australia and internationally and has had two solo shows. She has also studied at the Universitat der Kunste in Berlin, Germany. Her work has been published in several magazines and art journals, and in 2006 she was named one of Noise and Art & Australia's top 25 artists under 25. Currently, she is undertaking her Masters of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales' College of Fine Arts, where she aims to produce a large body of work dealing with memory, gesture, claustrophobia and anxious spaces. Tendencies of these particular themes are evident in the works selected for this exhibition.
Kim Winderman lives in Southern California working as a Graphic Designer and Photographer. Heavily influenced by her native state of California, Winderman's photographs unintentionally reference the dreamy and dramatic imagery of the Film Noir movement. Kim has exhibited in galleries throughout the state of California, including cities as Los Angeles and Costa Mesa to exhibiting internationally in London, UK. Winderman works in "EXPOSURE" capture a black and white rendition of a fleeting moment in a larger narrative.
Rebecca Zimmerman ,originally from Worthington, Ohio, now resides in Denver, Colorado, however travels an exuberant amount to capture her vivacious landscapes. Zimmerman attended the Art Institute of Colorado 2003–04, and then left the school after receiving a scholarship to the North American Nature Photography Association's annual conference. After feeling uninspired shooting commercial photography, Rebecca decided to go to the Rocky Mountain School of Photography's summer program. The following year led Zimmerman to her first success as an artist, having one of her photographs published in RMSP's catalog. Following this success, Rebecca received an honorable mention in the United Nation Environmental Programme's 2004–05 international photography competition on the environment. Rebecca's peaceful landscapes will be on display in the "EXPOSURE" exhibition.
