sieben
sieben (zee-ben), german for “seven,” showcases the work of seven accomplished artists from columbus’ german village. this historic settlement, which balances old world character and distinction with a contemporary vision for the future, has established a thriving community of resident artists.
one of mahan gallery’s goals is to support art and culture indigenous to the columbus area. we invited artists currently living in german village to submit entries for exhibition and were overwhelmed by the response. after much deliberation, we selected these seven individuals to comprise the mahan gallery “art haus” collection, featuring photography, painting, drawing and sculpture:
ed elberfeld-photography (view art): a photographer for over 30 years, ed is contributing a selection of works from his series, notes from nowhere. the title is derived from a book by james kunstler, describing the problems with modern american landscapes. ed photographs well recognized land structures such as taco bell or wal-mart omitting all signage.
sandra kight–painting (view art): most of sandra’s work involves the techniques of printmaking, collage, drawing, and painting. she creates abstracted representations of diverse scapes (water, sky, city, land, etc.). sandra strives to evoke a feeling of self-identity within the realm of space and time, focusing on the unseen of an environment.
bernice koff–painting (view art): considering herself a traditionalist, bernice paints exclusively on two-dimensional surfaces. her colorful depictions of floral arrangements and the fluid brushstrokes seen in her coy paintings express an influence from nature. most recently her works have been included in an exhibition at columbus’ franklin park conservatory paying homage to dale chihuly.
mimi mccann-collage/drawing (view art): mimi redesigns the images found in popular tabloid magazines, experimenting with different materials such as metallic powders, green tea spills, nail polish, coffee grinds, and jalapeno peppers. mimi hold a bfa from ohio state university with a concentration in painting and drawing.
sherry mullett-painting (view art): sherry earned a bfa from kent state university, and taught high school art prior to earning a ph.d. in education administration from the university of virginia. after returning to ohio to work in community education, she opened a studio and resumed painting. sherry’s figure paintings featured in the exhibit deal with the question of role and responsibility.
katie parker-ceramics (view art): through the use of porcelain, decals, china paint, and cut paper, katie investigates different methods of filling space with color and pattern. the end result of the process is a mesh of visual information that seems to exist between painting and architecture. originally from texas, katie received a mfa from ohio state university concentrating in ceramics.
robert tavani-painting (view art): robert creates paintings that are attractive, interesting, and well crafted. he considers his works meaningful, however meaning is subjective and views art making as a great venue for building and renewing one's self-image.
