jill gallenstein
jill is interested in the concepts of memory, subjectivity, objective documentation, and self-awareness. it is her contention, that our individual histories are subjective truths, which are based on nonobjective facts. we construct our own realities, and in doing so, we fictionalize our own lives.
the most recent images jill created depict women in outdoor suburban environments. they physically exist within this specific space, but their minds have built a different reality. they are able to escape the concrete world to exist somewhere else. the women are not victims- there is no sign of violence or pain. they simply have chosen not to participate in mediocrity and so have left their bodies behind.
the siamese twinsí series is shot in interior suburban settings. these twins are physically part of a collective whole, but mentally they are different. there is a constant debate between the individual self and exterior influences. the internal struggle of who to be and how to act is amplified by the fact that there can be two different ways of thinking contained in one physical form.
