steve bindernagel

steve creates ambiguous images that call the viewer to question what one sees. through the unfamiliar application of his medium in combination with the references that he pulls from a variety of sources, he visually poses questions as to how the paintings are made and what exactly the image depicts. the main interest of his work is to provide glimpses of focus to the gray areas of life, but without concrete answers. Steveís paintings are about connections. they establish a riddle, asking how maps and cellular structures both can give us clues to who we are. we are products of our surroundings and also of our genetic structure, but which weighs heavier? how do they combine to form our own composition? these are issues he deliberates as he creates paintings. In some of his pieces, elements of landscape, aerial photography or city planning are more significant in the composition, but in others, shapes blend and form together, weaving in and out of the background surroundings to reference a living organism in motion and adapting. often, these two ideas will overlap and play off each other as each painting takes on its own life. by covering his paintings with beeswax, his pieces become hybrid objects, blending the synthetic acrylic paint. with the natural warmth of the wax.
