Mahan Gallery is pleased to present Disconnect, an exhibition of photographs by Remi Thornton, Christian Storm and Ye Rin Mok. Disconnect aims to examine the relationship between humans and the environmental atmosphere which they create. Using minimalist photo techniques this exhibition captures the unsung details of stories and emotions without the focus on the figure, all the while never forgetting that there is a human presence involved.
Remi Thornton uses found street and atmospheric lighting to create haunting images, which capture the 'light within the dark'. He inadvertently creates landscapes that look staged, cinematic, and entirely unreal, while maintaining a very stark questioning and explorative tone. The complexity of Thornton's work lies in the simplistic, minimalist approach that he takes. Thornton graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2001 and currently lives and works in Boston, MA.
Christian Storm is inspired by minimalism and the juxtaposition between formalism and the informal nature photography can inherently possess. Storm has worked extensively with photographer Ryan McGinely shooting for Balenciaga, Missoni, French Vogue and Pop magazine. In addition, his work has appeared in Interview and Vice magazines. He received his BFA from Washington University and currently lives and works in Manhattan.
Ye Rin Mok has an eye for details that typically go unnoticed. Her photos reflect daily activities, intimate moments, and quiet contemplation that take on a meditative state. She has taken photos for Bust, Nylon, Tokion, and Spin magazines, and her photos were prominently featured in the Lions Gate Film "Hard Candy". Born in Seoul, Ye Rin currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
