Mahan Gallery is pleased to present Selective Superstition, an exhibition featuring new works by artists: Kat Moya, Jeff Kallet, Brian Aldrich and Fritz Kappler.
Hidden within layers of thought lies the details, observances, and speculation. It's in the details that we see the more complex attitudes and "signs." They seem to speak directly to us, signaling a path or possibility. When you sit and watch the world around you, if only for the sake of being, you may notice some things, perhaps the synchronicity of life itself, and your part in the puzzle.
You may cling to a lucky number, a special route, or some sort of daily ritual that makes you feel right. There is something ethereal about these things that seem to guide us. But superstition to its extreme has the power to damage our will, and open the doors to fear and prejudice. Misunderstood phenomenon has often resulted in tragedies and absurd precautions. In the end, it is all a very individual experience.
This body of work is dealing with the artists feelings about social masochism in history as well as signs or symbols that dedicate themselves to penetrating our thought process to reach greater spiritual heights. This exhibition is a documentation of the sort of things we do when we believe no one is watching, and what we choose for our own superstitious totem.
